Hands-On Masonry Restoration: Assessment, Repair, and Preservation

EVENT OVERVIEW

Attendees will participate in class discussion and hands-on experience covering several topics regarding masonry restoration. Presentations will include typical approaches to condition assessments, identification of damage/distress/deterioration of masonry, and example case studies. The presentations will serve as primers to introduce maintenance and repair techniques for each of the identified conditions, which will transition to hands-on work with masonry craftsmen. At the end of the day, there will be a panel discussion to answer any questions and to provide points of view from multi-parties from the designer to the craftsmen.

Refreshments and Lunch provided.  Please note any dietary restrictions when you register. Please wear closed toe shoes/boots and clothing that can get dirty.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

This workshop is approved by AIA for 7 LU|HSW continuing education credits. Direct reporting and certificates are available for attendees who complete the full day workshop.

1. Participants will learn different types of historic masonry and techniques to document conditions that will influence repairs to address potential impacts to life safety and occupant health.

2. Participants will gain knowledge of identifying staining and soiling and how to evaluate different cleaning techniques along with understanding the environmental impacts.

3. During hands-on sessions, participants will understand repair techniques, requirements for proper execution and consequences for improper execution through a learn by doing approach.

4. Case studies will provide participants with real world examples of conditions, challenges, and solutions that they can apply to their own practices.

PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE

Basic familiarity with historic masonry construction, conditions, and repair practices.

MEET OUR DEMONSTRATORS & PRESENTERS

 Rebecca Wong – WJE – Senior Associate – Rebecca Wong specializes in historic preservation and materials conservation and is an architectural historian in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards. Ms. Wong has performed investigations, condition assessments, repair design, and construction observation services for a variety of facade systems, including brick masonry cavity and mass walls, concrete, limestone, granite, marble, terra cotta, and wood, on both contemporary and historically significant buildings and structures.

  Jon Kovach – WJE – Associate Principal – Since joining WJE in 2008, he has provided professional services for numerous projects involving the investigation of distress conditions and water infiltration in various building enclosure systems, including brick masonry, stone, terra cotta, windows, curtain wall, skylights, metal wall panels, roofing, and waterproofing. Mr. Kovach is also experienced in the evaluation, stabilization, and repair design of masonry and stone claddings and in quality assurance for new construction projects based on lessons learned from existing building troubleshooting.

  Jeff Scarpelli – PROSOCO – Product Engineer – Jeff Scarpelli joined PROSOCO in 2021 as their anchoring system group’s product engineer. He is a licensed professional architectural engineer in Illinois and previously worked as a building enclosure consultant with a focus on masonry and natural stone buildings. In his role at PROSOCO, he performs research and development into new anchoring systems as well as providing technical and engineering support on facade stabilization projects for both contractors and design professionals.

Dennis Rude – Cathedral Stone – President & Stonecutter – In 1961, Dennis Rude began his masonry apprenticeship with the Stonecutters and Carvers Association of North America.
After serving in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, Dennis returned to masonry—completing his apprenticeship and accepting a stonecutter position with the Washington National Cathedral. By 1977, he had become superintendent of the National Cathedral’s Stone Works. A year later, Dennis took over ownership of the Stone Works, renaming it Cathedral Stone Company. During this time, Dennis worked with local contractors, cutting, carving, and setting stone on the White House, Smithsonian buildings, the Washington Monument, the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, and many private homes and institutions. It was also during this period that Dennis, in search of “a better way,” discovered JAHN Repair Mortars in Holland. In 1982, he began importing JAHN Mortars to the United States through Cathedral Stone Products. Over the next several years, he traveled to Holland more than fifty times to research and collaborate on JAHN Mortars. By 1990, Cathedral Stone Products became the sole manufacturer of JAHN Mortars in the U.S. In 2020, Dennis acquired Jahn International, becoming the owner and sole manufacturer of JAHN Mortars worldwide. Today, JAHN Mortars have expanded into complete JAHN Masonry Restoration Systems—a full line of biodegradable masonry cleaners, water repellents, potassium silicate coatings, biological treatments, paint strippers, and paint removers. All products are fully compatible with masonry and with other Cathedral Stone/JAHN products.

 Meg Rude- Cathedral Stone – Director of Business Development – was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and adopted at six months old by Dennis and Carolyn Rude. She grew up in Annapolis, Maryland, attending St. Mary’s High School before earning a degree in International Business from Elon University. From 2020 to 2022, she studied at NEOMA Business School in France and Italy, earning a second degree in International Management. A series of college internships helped Meg find her footing in business. While working in sales for Aflac, she realized the role wasn’t quite right for her — but the experience led to an unexpected mentorship with an Aflac insurance broker. She then spent seven months as a Venue Manager for Gordon Research Conferences in Lucca, Tuscany, working alongside international colleagues whose varied business backgrounds broadened her perspective on global business culture. After graduating in 2022, Meg joined the family business, Cathedral Stone Products, where she has spent the last two years as Director of Business Development. Having grown up watching the company’s ups and downs, she takes real pride in helping it thrive today. She values the freedom of working at a smaller company, where ideas move quickly into action — and where she continues to grow alongside the business itself.

Michael Liguori – Cathedral Stone – Senior Technical Specialist

Kevin Laven – PROSOCO – Pacific Northwest Manufacturer’s Representative – Kevin Laven has served as one of the two PROSOCO Pacific Northwest Manufacturer Representatives since 2021.  Kevin serves as a bridge between the leading architectual preservationists, masonry restoration contractors, and the AMT Labs/PROSOCO to bring restoration solutions to many Pacific Northwest projects.  His experince includes work on preserving architectual gems such as the Oregon State Capital, University of Washington’s Suzzallo and Allen Libraries, Boise High School, and the University of Oregon’s Huestis Hall.  Kevin specializes in assiting the greater A/E/C community with his experince in restoation anchors, masonry cleaners, protective treatments for masonry, and various air/water barriers.
